On National Press Freedom Day, we started one of the most-watched newscasts in the world in total silence: no “good evening,” no greetings, and no headlines. Just a silent message.
In recent years, the world has witnessed a rise in attacks on journalists and media outlets. In an election year in Brazil, the trend was expected to worsen even further.
As the most important media outlet in the country, we needed to start a conversation on the topic.
And, of course, it made an impact: more than 98 million people engaged in the conversation, and the hashtag #JornalNacional was on Twitter’s trending topics for over three hours.
